406MHz ELT and GPS in One Package
Possibly the most comprehensive and advanced ELT designed for general aviation, the 406MHz ELT from Emerging Lifesaving Technologies (E.L.T.) is the first ELT to provides an advanced 406MHz ELT transmitter with a built-in GPS to broadcast a precise location to search and rescue teams during an emergency - no interface to buy, no connections to onboard navigation equipment. E.L.T. has built this unit to exacting standards here in the US, making it an excellent no-compromise choice for general aviation applications.
Rugged Design
The integrated GPS features of the 406 from E.L.T. makes this unit attractive for sure, but they didn't stop there. After an analysis of past aircraft accidents that involved ELT failure, Emerging Lifesaving Technologies decided to make their system more robust than usual. They solved the most common cause of ELT failure which was a loss of battery power. Their analysis showed that many other ELT systems utilized off-the-shelf alkaline batteries which can corrode and dissipate their power quickly. Many of these system also used soldered connections to the battery which have a tendency to fail upon impact or deteriorate over time. By welding the battery connections, E.L.T. was able to show their battery connections withstanding impacts of 500 G's in their own internal tests. They also used a specific lithium manganese battery composition that has been shown to last longer without corrosion. The battery has even been tested to last for over 100 hours of continuous use! The battery pack and PC board are both constructed with shock absorbing materials to reduce potential damage from vibration or impact and all loose wires and connections are sealed to reduce failures. Even the antenna is built to last: the blade-style, dual 406MHz and GPS antenna is rated to 250 KTAS - great for all sorts of general aviation aircraft.
Powerful Features
E.L.T. has dropped the 121.5 signal broadcast from their 406 unit (which is an old and highly inaccurate signal anyway) and added the ability for an internal GPS to send coordinates along with the 406MHz signal. This alone makes this unit a powerful and attractive ELT. Emerging Lifesaving Technologies has also added a number of great features along with the integrated GPS. When activated the unit updates the GPS coordinates (accurate to within 300 feet) every 15 seconds which notifies Search and Rescue almost immediately of your situation and location. Also, each unit comes packaged with everything you need, the ELT, antenna, remote, cabling and mount.
--- Blade-style Antenna
The antenna used is a blade-style, combination 406MHz and GPS antenna rated to 250 KTAS at 35,000 feet. The antenna is dual polarized so that transmissions are sent out on both vertical and horizontal fields, preventing aircraft orientation from blocking the signals. Also available is a High-Speed antenna rated up to 600 KTAS at 50,000 feet. This antenna is a powerful addition to the ELT system and is similar to those found in commercial aviation applications that cost thousands more
--- Remote Switch
The included remote fits many common panel openings and uses both a tri-color LED and audible indicator to alert you of the ELTs status. This remote allows you to arm, perform a self-test or manually activate the ELT from the panel. Without manual activation, the unit will activate on impact when encountering 2.3Gs of acceleration or more.
--- Mounting Panel and Installation Kit
The mounting tray that comes with each unit has multiple hole patterns designed to make use of existing installation positions. This makes the Emerging Lifesaving Technologies 406 unit ideally suited not only for new ELT installations, but retrofits as well.
Easy to Maintain
With a 5 year replaceable battery that can easily be installed by you without the need of a special technician, the E.L.T. 406 unit is incredibly easy to maintain. The remote switch allows for self-tests to be performed at will - no other action is needed.
Manufactured to the Latest Regulations
The Emerging Lifesaving Technologies 406 ELT is built to meet or exceed FAA TSO and COSPAS-SARSAT regulations. The FAA has recently dropped the 121.5MHz requirement in aviation ELTs and the COSPAS-SARSAT network has ceased monitoring this frequency on their satellites since 2009. This 406MHz with GPS unit carries your aircraft into future regulations which will likely prohibit the use of ELTs that only broadcast the 121.5 frequency in aircraft.
