The Nonin "FlightStat" is the first pulse oximeter small and inexpensive enough for practical use in the cockpit. It's a tiny, pocket-sized unit not much bigger than your thumb. Two AAA alkaline batteries provide power for about 18 hours of continuous operation or 1,600 spot checks. (In inactive storage, the battery is depleted after about 9 months.) This unit is designed for aviation use, but is also perfect for climbers, hikers, skiers, and athletes who want to monitor their blood oxygenation during high-altitude activity. IMPORTANT NOTE: The FlightStat is a non-prescription pulse oximeter, and is not FDA-approved for medical use. Pulse oximeters are also ideal for monitoring home O2 use for lung- and heart-disease patients receiving oxygen therapy.
